Instructor: Emily Edwards moved
to Phoenix a year ago from Falmouth, Massachusetts. She holds a BA in
Fine Arts with an emphasis in Oil Painting. She previously worked for
six years in Massachusetts teaching in grades Kindergarten through
high school. During these years she worked on her abstract oil
paintings and started her Master’s degree. She finished her
Master’s Degree in Art Education in December 2012 and had her first
solo art show. In 2013, while working at a K-8 public school in
Sandwich, Massachusetts, she received word that her school was
closing after the next year. Deciding to make a drastic change, she
applied for jobs all over the U.S. She decided to take the position
that was offered in Arizona and worked for one year at a K-8 charter
school in Phoenix. During this time she realized that teaching art in
the high school setting was what she was most passionate about. While
very proud of the work she did at the charter and especially proud of
coaching the first co-ed middle school soccer team, she applied
primarily to high schools. She is thrilled and excited to share her
love of art with the Chaparral students. A former soccer player, she
now enjoys hiking, running, and biking with her boyfriend. She also
loves cats and has two, Neffie an evil half-Siamese and Ron Weasley a
friendly orange tabby.
Course Description and Goals:
Studio Art 1 is a two semester foundational course providing an
introduction to the structure and language of visual art. Students
will be studying visual arts using the four components of a quality
art program: aesthetics, art criticism, art history, and studio
production. Using the elements and principles of design, students
will produce quality visual art and develop the ability to apply the
language of art. The study of visual arts should help a student
realize that art is a combination of hard work, practice, and
reflection which leads to the knowledge of design as both process and
product. In order to accomplish this, the goal is to guide students
through sequential lessons, which will promote a visual art student’s
need to communicate, express themselves personally, celebrate and
display their art.
Requirements: Students will be
expected to develop a portfolio of two and three-dimensional work.
They will follow teacher directed assignments, which will help them
in learning about visual arts. Their artwork will be guided by
specific technical and conceptual assignments. Students will be
expected to keep track of their portfolio contents through
checklists. Assignments will be evaluated by student and teacher
using rubrics that the student will be aware of as the unit begins.
Grading will be reflected in the rubric. Each rubric will show
careful consideration for specific objectives of the assignment.
Included as assessments will be student notebooks,
journals/reflections, class projects, class group participation,
portfolios, exams, quizzes and homework. Tests will include
vocabulary and application assessments in which students demonstrate
what they have learned technically. Every student is expected to work
every day in order to keep a goal of high expectations. Student work
will be constantly assessed informally as they work during class
time. Students will be required to participate in self-evaluations
and group critiques. These important discussions will enhance
learning and articulation of their work. Students will become more
critically aware of visual relationships in their work and that of
others. Art history will often be added as a component of art
production where applicable.
Grading:
72% Assessment: Unit
projects/Exams, Quizzes, Mastery Practice, Self-Reflection/Rubric
18% Checks for Understanding:
Skills practice, Vocabulary, Worksheets, Bell work, Presentations,
Research
10% Semester Final Exam
Late Work Policy: Students are
allowed five extra days to turn in assignments AFTER the
assigned due date. During this time in class they are to work on
current class work only. Students may work at home or come in during
tutor time to catch-up. After five school days, the student’s grade
will be displayed as “NS” and calculated as a zero for failure to
submit the assignment. If work is turned in complete after the
five extra days, the COMPLETED assignment will
be evaluated by the teacher and reduced by one letter grade and MUST
be turned in prior to the end of the quarter in which the assignment
was due. Students are always given ample time to complete work as
the teacher monitors their progress daily. Due dates are posted both
in the classroom and online. Checks for Understanding/Sketchbook
Assignments are required for art students. These assignments will
have due dates and students will have at least one to two weeks to
complete them. The assignments will be given one week in advance. If
a student is absent on the due date, they must turn in the work on
the day they return to class. If a student has been absent
several days prior, they will have the opportunity to turn in work
the = # days absent after the due date. Failure to turn in these
required lessons will affect the art student’s grade. These CFU’s
are the technical training for unit projects. Unit coursework must be
completed within assessment guidelines. All unit coursework must be
submitted before the unit project assessment deadline. Redo, retakes
and “NS” work, when offered, are at the discretion of the
teacher. Work must be completed before the end of the quarter in
